PaineWebber was a U.S.-based stock brokerage and asset management firm founded in 1880. With a strategy of strong growth and acquisitions, the company became a significant player in the brokerage and investment banking business. In 1995, PaineWebber acquired Kidder, Peabody & Company, further expanding its reach. By the time of its acquisition by UBS AG in 2000, PaineWebber was the fourth largest brokerage in the U.S., with 385 offices nationwide.
